November 14-18, 2016
7th graders are now moving into their introductory unit on stage basics and audition tactics. In addition, we've started working on Christmas concert music!
November 7-11, 2016
This week we added the 6/8 meter and the term ballad to our Folk music elements. The 7th graders listened to the ballad The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald and also watched a video clip about African tribal culture and how rhythm plays a part in all their everyday activities.
October 31-November 4, 2016
This week the 7th graders figured out which musical elements help to differentiate Cowboy music from Appalachian ("hillbilly") music. Ask your 7th grader which songs have lyrics that are truly different from subject matter (Git Along Little Doggies, On Top of Old Smokey), and what specific meter belongs to many a cowboy song! (Hint: You can definitely waltz to them...)

As we move into American folk music, the 7th graders have been exploring the conventional instruments of the British Isles (fiddle, mandolin) as well as the unconventional instruments of the Appalachian mountain folks (such as the washboard, cowbell, jug....)

This week we are learning more about the elements of music through the many musical styles in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat...from syncopated Calypso rhythms to the 50's style of Elvis Presley, there is no shortage of FUN happening in this class!

7th grade took their first quiz on their new vocab/equations. We are also working hard on learning harmony for the upcoming "Night of Lights" performance on Sept. 24th which will be repeated on GP/VIP Day October 7th.
